Job purpose
• To lead on the design and development for a wide range of Kineo projects, taking accountability for ensuring design and development on projects is performed to Kineo’s client service, quality, time and budget expectations.
Reporting line
• The Lead Instructional Designer will report to the Sheffield Kineo Office Project Director for day to day work
• The Lead Instructional Designer will report to and be supported by one of the Kineo Partners for technical aspects of the work (standards, development opportunities)
Key Responsibilities
• Scope content for project, determining learning objectives, structure and order
• Determine appropriate design approach to offer to clients, including quantifying effort needed
• Draft and present design treatments for inclusion in proposals and at client pitches
• Select the authoring approach according to client needs / budget
• Lead team of Instructional Designers on projects: set and maintain standards, review work, provide feedback
• Where required, manage client relationship as first point of contact for all project requirements
• Instructional design on projects: scripting, defining graphics, audio, video and animation requirements
• Where required supervise the production of media components, briefing and coordinating resources
• Client liaison regarding design issues
• Work with a team including graphic designer/artist, developer, project manager to steer the instructional design of the project
• Contribute to the development of Kineo’s design team through coaching, mentoring and line management of instructional designers as required
• Contribute to the development of Kineo’s design offering through research and development of new approaches
Key tasks:
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out tasks related to the instructional design on projects and sales opportunities. These will include but not be limited to:
• Study sales briefs, collect information from the client in order to create a design treatment
• Take a brief from the client, project manager and/or lead instructional designer regarding the design requirements
• Draft or contribute to design approach
• Brief the graphic designer on art direction required
• Work from content sources provided by the client to script designs for e-learning
• Work with SMEs to further clarify content and approach required
• Obtain feedback from clients and amend the script accordingly
• Obtain sign off for scripts
• Brief the developer on the requirements
• Review the built course and feedback to the developer
• Present the completed e-learning to the client and obtain feedback
• Carry out any specific tasks/projects as assigned by the Projects Director
Characteristics: Essential
• At least 3 years experience in an e-learning or technical writing position
• Highly enthusiastic, flexible and dynamic individual comfortable working in a fast-paced growth company, on multiple projects with tight deadlines
• Capable of taking initiative: making recommendations on best approach in terms of scoping, design and scripting and following through with action, working with support of lead designer
• Proven instructional design skills, ability to identify an engaging and effective design approach to achieve project and learning objectives; ability to apply/develop sound instructional models (samples of design work required)
• Excellent writing and editing skills, with proven ability to write a range of technical, instructional, educational materials in different contexts, in a range of tones and styles (writing samples required)
• Strong analytical skills, ability to review large volumes of information and make informed decisions about priorities and treatment of materials
• Strong communication skills: capable explaining rationale of decisions to clients, communicating progress and updates to clients and to colleagues, communicating design aspects and requirements to graphic designers and technical teams members
• Strong IT capabilities in range of MS Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), comfortable learning new applications including e-learning authoring tools and graphics application packages
Characteristics: Desirable
• Experience in developing authoring tools and working with LMS/CMSs (e.g. Articulate, Captivate, Mohive, Atlantic Link, Flash, Dreamweaver, Moodle, other open source LMS/CMS) and their capabilities
• Experience with project plan development and cost estimation
• Experience managing, coaching, mentoring others
